We were taught that marketing is satisfying customers’ needs. That’s what prostitutes do. In entrepreneurship, we were given the same bullshit. Find out what the market wants. Locate a gap in the market. Provide a solution. Wrong. This notion makes entrepreneurs and marketers nothing but prostitutes to the real owners of society. The real owners are people who make culture. They determine what people want. They are generally rich and famous. They wear a new kind of clothing, and the public follows. Monkey see, monkey do. If entrepreneurs and marketers follow the market, they are nothing but prostitutes, no different from politicians.
An entrepreneur is a market leader, not a follower. He makes a new and innovative product. He finds people who need it, or wait for the market to catch up. It is only about time if his innovation is really good. If it did not happen, he probably needs to make something even more innovative. One thing he shouldn’t be doing is prostituting himself, which is what teachers at my college would suggest.
Similarly, marketers are changemakers. We all know that society/an average man is not to be followed. People who epitomize average are bound to be below average. Thus, the job of a marketer is to change culture so average people see value in a new improved product. And no value is not what people say is valuable. That again leads us to prostitution and OnlyFans. Thus, marketing is changing society/people in meaningful ways. A marketer is like a revolutionary while an entrepreneur is the leader of a revolution.
If Martin Luther King had gone to Mississippi State, he would've probably sold products and services to keep African Americans enslaved because that's what the market wanted. But he acted as an entrepreneur. He changed the culture itself. People who worked with, his associates, were like marketers. Together, they introduced a new product and changed the culture to make society see value in it. The product was freedom.
That’s it. Don’t be a prostitute.
